Freeway Ramps

No application is really drawing nice ramps yet, but the smarts you can see in Google’s maps show that the data has the potential to support some nice visuals. Having played with doing this sort of thing in an application for work I can tell you that it’s no easy task. The data may be there, but it’s not straightforward. Someday I would imagine that the shapefiles for these highways will be in 3d and it’ll be possible to do a fully dimensioned render and style a 2d view appropriately. Then these things will really look nice. Well before then someone’s going to come out with something that looks really nice in all but the corner cases, though. The programmers working on this stuff are too clever not to.

basically, live maps and yahoo maps are incompetent. funnily, no mention of mapquest, but then their cartography always sucked particularly bad.

Bartz uses Google Maps

Bartz was asked about the maps business and how Yahoo has fallen behind. She admitted that “I don’t use Yahoo Maps, I use Google Maps.”

Maps team is happy to announce the single biggest imagery update on maps.yahoo.com since the program inception. we’ve enabled up to 2 extra zoom levels of aerial photography and satellite imagery for the Satellite button for 100s of cities around the US. Map API comparison

Yahoo! offered the fastest performance, the smallest total download, and the smallest memory footprint in my tests. Microsoft’s maps took a half-second longer to download and display than either of its competitors. Google had the highest total file count due to its mapping tile behavior.

we just did some optimizations, so that won’t be true for long.

Google Maps India

Google Maps for the country of India now features the ability to search for points of interest and addresses.

meanwhile, the much touted yahoo maps india finds not one of these examples.

Night Explorer

neat! uses the EXIF timestamp in conjunction with lat/long to show nighttime shots. now if camera manufacturers weren’t so lame, they would make sure metadata capture is easier and more accurate.

Yahoo not all dire

Compete.com most of it, though. maps declined, and so did search.

a toolkit to visualize text (well, tags) geographically on a map. Check out the sample applications, where we use Flickr tags on a map to build a world exploration tool.

Yahoo! aerial imagery in OSM

OpenGeoData hmm, y! must have found a loophole to allow OSM to reverse-engineer streets from their aerial imagery (or they will hear from teleatlas soon)
