Orion Wifi this looks superior to boingo etc because it’s transparent for users. hopefully this scales fast, this would have been technically possible for nearly 20 years, though to be fair the backbone was far less mature. i remember fon in 2003, among others. it’s disappointing how long “obvious” ideas take sometimes.

Wifi is flaky
Wifi connections fail an astonishing 45% of the time. And the time they take is hugely variable, with 15% of connections taking more than 5 seconds.
Keystroke Recognition
WiKey achieves more than 97.5% detection rate for detecting the keystroke and 96.4% recognition accuracy for classifying single keys. In real-world experiments, WiKey can recognize keystrokes in a continuously typed sentence with an accuracy of 93.5%.
Body Shape Identification
identification accuracy is 88-94% when the candidate user set changes from 6 to 2, showing that the proposed human identification method is effective in domestic environments.
LinkNYC
looking forward to it. as usual, 1 guy is working, with 10 others standing around.
Today, workers began installing the first LinkNYC access points in New York.

Full duplex wifi
This paper presents the design and implementation of the first in-band full duplex WiFi radios that can simultaneously transmit and receive on the same channel using standard WiFi 802.11ac PHYs and achieves close to the theoretical doubling of throughput in all practical deployment scenarios. Full duplex, if possible, has tremendous implications for network design, not least of which is the fact that cellular networks could cut their spectrum needs by half. With an in-band full-duplex system we could use a single channel to get the same performance.
Eye-Fi
the automatic geotagging is awesome.
JetBlue Wifi
JetBlue, Yahoo! and RIM have announced free in-flight WiFi services. But there’s a catch as there always is. The service is limited to Yahoo! Mail, Messenger and WiFi enabled BlackBerries will have access to their BB mail and messenger.
eww. why bother?
MTA Wifi
woo. not sure what the MTA has to “test” wifi for, but if we’ll get wifi in all stations.
2012-09-26: Free WiFi in the NYC subway? You could probably outfit all 200 underground stops for 20m and then put a captive portal on it for millions to enjoy per day. Or make them solve captchas: an underground workforce gasping for bandwidth.
