Sculpting possibility space

will wright, the creator of the sims, is speaking now. will is showing funny episodes from his online world “here i am hanging out with my boyz, enjoying refreshments” (pictures of a bad neighborhood on the screen). now he talks about the concept of possibility space. (reminds me of the all possible universes discussion). “you can describe the meaningful verbs of a game very easily: kill, race, manage.” “we found that user were quickly comfortable with the idea of shopping, it soothed them.” will asserts that science has been moving away from calculus to simulation, while games have gone in the opposite direction. thus the creation of elaborate physics engines. now he is showing lots of interesting slides in quick succession about feedback mechanisms in games, topologies, and patterns. he is talking far too quickly for me to summarize it. “failures are entertaining, it becomes boring quickly to just explore the path of success”. Cybernetics, System Dynamics, Cellular Automata and Chaos Theory are some approaches to model reality that have been developed. Will also mentions the old favorite of the blogosphere, the Power law distribution. “Relativity theory and quantum mechanics describe different aspects of the universe (very successfully), but taken together they cannot explain a duck.” Game development is moving from 1 person efforts in 1984 to several 100s for The Sims 2. Extrapolating from that quickly gets you $500M games with 2.5M developers. “People are increasingly designing their environments: Cell phone covers, fashion, interiors..” Machinima is becoming increasingly popular: shooting film in virtual reality. In the future, metrics are becoming important for the further development of these games. Looking at purchase history, relationships allow to devise elaborate model of user behavior. Based on these patterns, potential matches can be found (think tickle on steroids). someone asks about copyright protection, and will says he personally uses cracks “its the easiest.” 🙂

Elektronik Supersonik

The tiny Eastern European republic of Molvania was disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest this year. Zladko Zlad Vladcik was to perform his very popular techno-ballad, Elektronik – Supersonik – described as a melodic fusion combining hot disco rhythms with cold war rhetoric.

Hard to believe with lyrics like this:

Hey baby, wake up from your asleep.
We have arrived unto the future
And the whole world is become…
Elektronik supersonik

Firewall videoconferencing

I have been researching various programs for video conferencing. most solutions are based around SIP which does pose unreasonable demands on firewalls for now. maybe one day, when we have wrestled back the end-to-end principle. more specifically, when SIP proxies are widely available and are easy to install. in the meantime, here is a list:
working

not working

i’ll update the list as i investigate more applications. note that i only considered free solutions. there are quite a few subscription-based solutions, not sure about their firewall traversal abilities.

Mars Terraforming

A couple of years ago, I read the mars series from kim stanley robinson. Now NASA held a debate on martian terraforming.

Should we do it? Well, that gets down to a question that we’ve never had to face on Earth before: the distinction between nature and life. On Earth there is no meaningful distinction between nature and life, even in the remotest, coldest deserts.
We see that distinction for the first time when we look beyond the Earth, when we look at the moon. There’s nature; there’s no life. When we look at Mars, we also see nature, probably no life. It’s different from the moon, and we lack the word that distinguishes between something that’s dead, and something that was never alive. The moon was never alive. Mars is dead. The question in my mind is – should we bring it back to life?

2007-06-25: This seems a bit optimistic

I believe it’s a 50% chance that young children now alive will walk on martian meadows…will swim in martian lakes

2018-02-22: Adding a magnetic shield

In a talk at the NASA Planetary Science Vision 2050 Workshop at the agency’s headquarters, Green presented simulations, models, and early thinking about how a Martian magnetic field might be re-constituted and the how the climate on Mars could then become more friendly for human exploration and perhaps communities.

It consisted of creating a “magnetic shield” to protect the planet from those high-energy solar particles. The shield structure would consist of a large dipole—a closed electric circuit powerful enough to generate an artificial magnetic field.

Simulations showed that a shield of this sort would leave Mars in the relatively protected magnetotail of the magnetic field created by the object. A potential result: an end to large scale stripping of the Martian atmosphere by the solar wind, and a significant change in climate.

“The solar system is ours, let’s take it. And that, of course, includes Mars. But for humans to be able to explore Mars, together with us doing science, we need a better environment.”

2024-04-25: Mars is a lot more challenging for life than I realized

There are 5 primary obstacles that life must overcome to survive on Mars: radiation, toxins, temperatures, atmosphere, and water. Water, and its lack of availability to lifeforms, would be the prevailing reason why nothing could grow on Mars. All liquid water on Mars has a water activity below 0.5. There are no known lifeforms that could survive in this water, as the high salt concentration would quickly suck the liquid out of cells. Unlike the organisms that can survive extreme radiation, toxins, temperature, and low pressure, there are no known adaptations that life on Earth has evolved to get around the water problem.

Still growing up

My friend Teddy called me earlier: “Any plans for tonight? Yes, busy busy. Well.. I’ve got tickets for Peter Gabriel. Oh, I think I can make time after all.” So he picks me up in his Mercedes convertible, and before I know it Peter starts working the crowd. Ss a Gabriel newbie, I could focus on the gadgets: Segway-riding for “Games without frontiers”, into-a-big-bouncy-transparent-sphere-climbing and rolling-around-the-stage for “Growing up”, and some funky-low-fi-bulb-jacket for “Sledgehammer”. I liked the show quite a bit, and also the story about the growing up of an apache kid who was deserted on a hilltop for 14 days after having been bitten by a snake. I’m glad I don’t have to earn my merit that way.

Career Planning

A few years ago, a manager of mine gave me the assignment to work on a 5-year career plan. I had never created a career plan before (not even to plot out goals for the coming year), so I was completely unprepared for how and why I should do this. Luckily, she shared her own plan as a guide, but I still agonized through the exercise. Over time I have become aware of how important this was for me to do. Looking and assessing where I was at the time, really thinking about what I wanted to be doing in the future, gave me the tools to make the right decisions to make things happen.

while i totally disdain the “save for your SUV / mortgage / life insurance” plans, there is some great advice in this article by erin malone how to map out your career.
2013-04-29: this is the kind of question most people never ask themselves, instead blaming the man for their life sucking.

What’s the last thing you did to advance your career or improve yourself?
On your 85th birthday, what do you want others to say about your accomplishments?
What would you be doing if paying the bills wasn’t an issue?
What are you passionate about that you’re not pursuing?
What have been your greatest accomplishments so far?
What’s the greatest value that you bring to your work?
What does it mean to you to be satisfied at work?
What’s your personal definition of success?
What about your work energizes you?
Where are you playing it too safe?

Designing Your Life is one of the most popular courses at Stanford. Taught by Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, the class teaches how you can use design thinking and techniques to shape your life and career.

Powers of 10

View the Milky Way at 10M light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons.

this time: the real deal. last time: tongue in cheek
2022-10-04: This Kurzgesagt brings this home in a much better way.
