Joost no Broadband

the semantic games to redefine broadband as 200kb/s in the us are finally coming home to roost.

Joost, despite an early lead when it comes to the P2P television is beginning to get some criticism about its video quality. A skeptical report on JoostTeam points out that the bit rate is ~50% that of video from DivX Stage6 or the iTunes Store. And even that resolution is inferior to standard definition digital video from cable providers. While Joost promises that they’re working on improving the quality, and touts the power of their advanced video compression codecs, there’s only so much that compression can do. The fundamental problem that Joost faces is the fact that the broadband available to North American households simply isn’t fast enough for them to provide image quality comparable to digital cable or satellite, much less high-definition video.

US entry denied

nice case study why the xenophobic, protectionist policies at the INS are complete nonsense, and harmful for business everywhere.

This time, I had printed the materials for the trainings class in Germany and put them into my suitcase. Upon arrival in the US, I passed immigration, but was stopped in customs. My suitcase was searched, and I was asked about the trainings materials. After answering that these are for the trainings I am conducting, an immigration officer was called, and I was put in an interview room. For the next 4.5 hours I was interviewed about who exactly I am, why I am coming to the US, what the nature of my contract with Blackhat is, and why my trainings class is not performed by an American citizen. After 4 hours, it became clear that a decision had been reached that I was to be denied entry to the US, on the grounds that since I am a private person conducting the trainings for Blackhat, I was essentially a Blackhat employee and would require an H1B visa to perform 2 days of trainings in the US.

Arcade Recruiting

The US Army has developed a stand-up arcade version of its video-game “America’s Army” and it will seed it in arcades around the country. This is straight out of a science fiction novel, but what would be even more skiffy is if they were to put these in arcades outside of the US. I’m surprised they’re charging to play these games — the natural thing would be to make these the only free games in the arcade, so the poorest and most desperate kids would dominate them, absorbing messages about signing up.

Farcical debates

As for these being questions from ’average’ people, I find this unlikely. Leaving aside the skewed age demographic, these aren’t questions from people too poor to have the computer equipment. These aren’t questions from people who work 2 jobs, just to make ends meet and who don’t have the time to create such videos.

CNN is filtering the questions and therefore doubts that “tough questions” make it through. “This isn’t politics, this is entertainment,. All that’s different from entertainment offerings in the past is we’ve exchanged the Ziegfield girls for YouTube sock puppets.”
