Dutch regression

Orthodox Christian members of parliament have introduced a bill that would allow civil officials with moral objections to refuse to perform gay marriages. And Dutch authorities are trying to curtail the activities of an abortion rights group that assists women in neighboring countries where abortions are illegal.

Will they boycott reality?

The National Union of Journalists in the UK is planning a Europe-wide day of protest against cuts in journalism. One wonders whom they’ll picket: the internet? the economy? their readers? reality? Whom can they boycott this time (at least this isn’t Israel’s fault; that was the NUJ’s last grand political act). Protesting is so empty, so unproductive, ultimately so silly.

journalist union has no better idea than a protest. old think: stage a protest. new think: get busy solving the problem.

Germany Idiocy

Google might disable Gmail in Germany as last fallback should the German government maintain its position in regards to a newly passed law on record-keeping and supervision of internet traffic. According to this law, email services here will be forced to maintain personally identifiable records attached to email accounts. What exactly this might mean for Google I don’t know, but perhaps it would result in Gmail having to start requiring full addresses (and perhaps even having to verify an address by sending a snail mail to the user). As usual in these circumstances, the law is pushed through in the name of fighting “terrorists.”

Swiss languages

They didn’t reckon on a popular uprising of defenders of the national languages, many in the canton of Neuchâtel, who clamoured, “Don’t mess with our mailboxes!”. Chastened, PostMail capitulated. Although the new logo will continue to be used for the enterprise, the postboxes will continue to bear the original language-specific labels, at least until 2010. One of the ringleaders in the campaign not only deplored “PostMail” as a “nasty anglicism” but pointed out that it was also a pleonasm. You know you’re living in a place with more than a pretension to cul-chah when you encounter the word “pleonasm” in the daily newspaper

Waco 2.0

Ed and Elaine Brown have barricaded themselves in what has been described as a “fortress-like compound” after they were convicted of refusing to pay income tax to the federal government earlier this year. In recent days their phone, power and internet have been cut off and camouflaged SWAT teams, helicopters, armored vehicles and possibly combat robots have descended on this formerly quiet area.

iPhonomics

The iPhone will kill the Blackberry. Apple TV will kill the DVR. In Steve’s view, the iPhone is center-stage—everything else is a peripheral to it.

oh my. that steve dude used to say the same thing about RSS. you’d talk about transactional SQL, say, and he would be like “but what about RSS?”
