In 2008, most Web 2.0 workers aren’t rich enough to draw the righteous anger of their slightly-less-privileged neighbors. Except for Googlers who dare move into the city’s youth-culture ghetto between Cesar Chavez and Market. Urban hipsters who have art degrees can wash my car.

Comical Failure

Oklahoma County Commissioner Brent Rinehart is facing a tough reelection campaign. He’s been accused of abusing his office for personal gain, and will go on trial in the fall on felony campaign finance charges. But apparently, this is all a conspiracy of homosexuals, liberal do gooders, and good ol’ boys to force Rinehart out of office. Rinehart lays out his case in a comic book he’s sending out to voters, which—you may be surprised to learn—he wrote himself.

Google hates XML

I just came across an article that announced Google open sourced their ‘Protocol buffers’ but decided NOT to use XML. They claim they could not use XML because ‘it isn’t going to be efficient enough for this scale’. WTF??? If this statement came from someone else, I would understand, but these guys are supposed to KNOW markup. Their solution is supposedly “20-100x faster” – which I refer to as “Lies, damned lies, and statistics”. I bet I could make XML run circles around their system just by simplifying their schema.

what happened to oreilly standards? recently, they seem to have a lot of clueless “contributors”.

California’s Department of Public Health has issued cease and desist letters to 13 genetic testing startups – most notably 23andMe. They are mandating that the labs demonstrate that they have been certified by both the state and federal government, and, perhaps more importantly, that all genetic tests were ordered by a patient’s doctor, which is required by state law.

Google caught Astroturfing

The Australian competition watchdog has accidentally revealed Google as the anonymous source of a submission that is highly critical of eBay’s proposal to force its users onto the PayPal payments system.
