It took me 2 days to get everything extracted, upscaled and put it back together in a way that was pleasing. This resulted only in the first 5 minutes of the episode being done (the episode recap, the opening scene, and the intro). Still pretty good time for a mid-to-high end PC with software that isn’t just available to professionals. The result left me pretty awestruck. It looked better than I had hoped. No weird issues or anything. It looked pretty much like an HD version of DS9. Since (moving) pictures are worth more than 1000 words, here are 2 comparison videos that show off the improvement I was able to get with this machine learning based upscaling technique. Imagine what a real team could do, with more powerful equipment, custom trained neural networks … and access to the original SD files instead of a DVDRip like me.

China Science Fiction
For years, we’ve been making wonderful things. We make your iPods. We make phones. We make them better than anybody else, but we don’t come up with any of these ideas. So we went on a tour of America talking to people at Microsoft, at Google, at Apple, and we asked them a lot of questions about themselves, just the people working there. And we discovered they all read science fiction… so we think maybe it’s a good thing.
The Drone
A serial killer transfers his consciousness into a consumer drone right before he is killed, then flies off to terrorize newlyweds. The couple must fight to stop the insidious device before it destroys them both.
Brainstorm
35 years ago, a fantastic movie came out that starred 4 Hollywood legends, 3 of whom were Oscar winners. It was directed by one of the most important and influential visual artists in film history, and the plot foretold the invention of virtual reality decades ahead of its time. The script was written as a showcase for a new technology designed to change the way we see movies. One of the Hollywood legends died before the movie was finished, a mysterious death, and this ended up being her last movie—And you’ve never heard of it.
Final Offer
In Mark Slutsky’s short scifi film “Final Offer”, a traffic ticket lawyer awakens in a doorless room and discovers he’s there to make a deal with an interstellar attorney that could affect all life on Earth.
Electric Dreams
recommended.
Amazon’s Electric Dreams is more optimistic about the future than Black Mirror. These adaptations of Philip K. Dick’s short stories can still be brutal and unnerving, but they take a less cynical view of humanity
Mortal Engines
1000s of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns.
ADAM
done with unity, this is westworld level storytelling at 1% of the cost.
Altered Carbon
It’s possible this won’t suck.
2020-02-28: I thought season 1 was pretty strong, so looking forward to season 2.
China social credit
black mirror nails another one:
instead of trying to enforce stability or conformity with a big stick and a good dose of top-down fear, the government is attempting to make obedience feel like gaming. It is a method of social control dressed up in some points-reward system. It’s gamified obedience.
