this is 21th-century politics. way to go, tara! Guys like Coble (as described by his staff), Tara’s opponent in this election, can’t even turn a computer on. What’s worse is that he is actively engaging as a committee chair in making policy for the Internet and related businesses. it may seem to happen in a land far away, but this is the watershed. if they (old media interests) win, you will be forced to be a diligent consumer, with no possibility to be creative. if tara wins, you will enjoy your digital freedoms in the future.

kissing dictators
joshua hits it on the head when he ridicules carters recent nobel prize.
He took to heart the idea of “turn the other cheek”, and began in earnest to seek out any evil or violent dictator with whom he could hug, kiss, and turn the other cheek to demonstrate the true peace-loving and affable “Carter” nature. Carter redoubled his efforts, though, and his love sessions with Fidel Castro, Hafez al Assad, Kim Il Sung, and the Sandinistas seem to have done the trick of winning him the nobel prize

Politics with a clue
tara sue grubb is running for the us congress elections in november.
There is much to learn and much to discuss before November. I have put myself in the bullseye to stand up for our rights as free thinking citizens. I tell you now, I am no perfect being. I may be young, but I have learned much and have the scars to prove it. I am jumping head first into this fire for many reasons. Once thing is certain. I am losing my personal life and privacy, subjecting myself to men and institutions of money, power and greed. I have no shame. My personal privacy is worth the sacrifice if it means preserving the privacy that is OURS.
What about a 26 year old female running against an aged, 18 year career politician? We are polar opposites in many ways. Despite the odds, whatever they be, I am as serious as a heart attack. You don’t have to be a senior politician to understand the concepts of liberty, laissez-faire and justice. You don’t have to be a mastermind to see the people of this nation have been pushed into estrangement. Finally, you don’t have to be a suit to change the way things are.
politicians that actually talk to their constituency? what a welcome change. tara, lets hope you can pull it off.
Bangkok Day 6
most interesting thing by far was the interview in the early evening with webcontrol and gateinfo, 2 thai e-business companies.
both of them have a range of very interesting projects coming up, and so i am left with the difficult task of deciding whom to give the go ahead. i opted to go with them instead of siemens because they are more entrepreneurial in style and have their technological act much more together.
i hope to hold a series of brown paper bag speeches / seminars about the implications of web services to the employees of these 2 companies. doing so will allow me to contribute my interest in the field towards a better technological vision for these enterprises. i hope to spark their interest, and therefore
work with these technologies during my stay.
on a different subject, thailand is really going down the toilet. lulled by a comparatively healthy economy, the thai leadership is asleep at the wheel,
and rotten to the core with corruption. they fail to implement crucial reforms, such as a cleanup of the bureaucracy or more stringent rules for bookkeeping. instead, they propose (this i no joke! i did not make this up) to align their time zone with singapore because singapore has been economically successful. do they really believe that they will achieve anything other than a good laugh with fumbled strategies like these?
Dictators on trial
it has become fashionable to hold everyone to the same legal standards, even former heads of state. but does it matter? recently, the newspapers have been full with articles about the trials that face milosevic, estrada, pinochet, among others. obviously, the legal system is more powerful than ever, tackling cases that may have seemed hopeless just a few short years ago. the international court of den hague is gaining status and has started to hear cases like germany versus the us where germany condemns the death penalty.
while it is worthwhile to have a global court system to protect human rights issues, there is another side to it which is not at all pleasant. the hague convention will, if ratified, allow jurisdictions of member states to enforce their laws in other member states.
this could mean that china could sue someone in switzerland over free speech because what is legal to say differs a great deal from china to switzerland.
