NYC Gems

This is a pretty great and comprehensive list of what makes the city awesome.

Following up our master list of 160 secrets of New York City, we bring to you 160 hidden gems of New York City! Every one of these hidden gems are places for you to discover. Some show the uniqueness and quaintness of New York City’s architecture, others reveal the infrastructure that supports New York or the history hidden in plain sight. Some are simply off-the-beaten path. All, we believe, are hidden gems in their own right. The majority are publicly accessible although some only on limited occasions. Some come from our book about the secrets of Brooklyn, but this list covers all 5 boroughs of the city. Many others come from the archives of Untapped New York and some come from exciting user-generated submissions on our Facebook page. So without further ado, here are the hidden gems of New York City!

Dhamaka

At their newest venture, Dhamaka, located inside Essex Market, diners won’t find butter chicken on the menu. In fact, it’s likely that a majority of restaurant goers won’t recognize most of the dishes on the menu here. For Pandya and Mazumdar, that’s an intentional choice.

yes! down with stupid butter chicken, bring out the good stuff.

Flying ambulances in NYC

Hatzolah Air, the air division of the volunteer emergency medical service organization pre-ordered 4 air ambulances from Urban Aeronautics. Renderings from press releases announcing the purchase show a futuristic-looking vehicle landing on crowded city streets to assist at the site of an accident.

“Its compact size will enable it to land in the middle of a busy city street, making it a perfect fit for medical evacuation missions by dramatically decreasing the time it takes to arrive on-scene, treat and transport sick or injured patients to appropriate medical facilities,”

while the flying car cosplay on display is a bit premature, there are prototypes, and they seem to at least be thinking about noise.

Waterline Square Park

New York City’s newest public park is a nominee for Untapped New York’s Best of New York Awards. Waterline Square Park, which opened over the summer of 2020, was chosen along with other New York City parks that opened this year by our panel of urban experts in the category of Best New Park. You can see all of the nominees and vote for your favorites here! Located between Manhattan’s Midtown and Upper West Side, this riverfront park features a huge children’s playground, lush greenery and unique water features.

Queens street vendors

With little recourse, many immigrants from Latin America — who already were among the hardest hit by the virus — have resorted to what they did back home: working as ambulantes — street vendors. But for decades, New York has capped the number of citywide street vending permits — it is currently limited to 2900 for food and 853 for vendors of general merchandise — creating a black market and making vendors vulnerable to high fines. Ambulantes are frustrated and feel that a respected way of making a living in other parts of the world is criminalized here.

it is way past time to stop this permits nonsense.
