Laundering Office
Microsoft has announced that it will – with a European partner – contribute to an open-source project for reading and writing Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Visio files. The Apache POI API is already used by various open source projects to handle Microsoft Office documents, but work is needed to add Office Open XML support as used by Office 2007 and 2008.
looks like the sourcesense guys are helping microsoft to establish a standard no one wants. not sure that is progress.
Google Docs good enough
Then I saw “Open as as a Google Document” and I tried and, you know, it’s Good Enough. And snappy. And free. And internationalized. And I’m not the only person having this experience.

I just hope that these are typos, otherwise it would certainly look like really weird XML. If they are typos, I wonder how many there are in the spec? Surely the guys at Ecma had enough time to review this? Why am I now suppose to act as a junior sub editor? I would understand if it was a missing quote or full-stop here or there. But 3 quite major glitches within consecutive 3 lines? Thats quite scary.

it would take ~150 person-years to fully implement office xml in a competing product.. oy
