Competing with free

neither Microsoft nor Apple can compete at the new price points being plumbed by companies looking to cut costs. With open-source software maturing fast, Linux, OpenOffice, Firefox, MySQL, Evolution, Pidgin and some 23k other Linux applications available for free seem more than ready to fill that gap. By some reckonings, Linux fans will soon outnumber Macintosh addicts. Linus Torvalds should be rightly proud.

Gmail by Microsoft

Somehow, this still misses part of the Microsoft feeling – the current design is just too bright & light, and it doesn’t have enough glamor. I’ll darken the colors a bit and add some smooth shades. Also, admittedly, Hotmail is a bit slower than Google’s competing service, so we’ll add some “loading” messages. Usually there’s less focus on unclutteredness with the Redmond guys, so we’ll add some MSN news bits and “special offers” where space is left. Plus, to increase user lock-in, let’s get rid of the “sign out” link. I’m also putting less emphasis on search, moving the box to the bottom right and replacing it with a dog:

MS Gmail

i really don’t see what the unwashed masses see in hotmail

Gmail Migration

we’re excited to announce the new Google Apps Email Migration API, which can move email from anywhere – not just IMAP systems – to the Premier, Education or Partner Editions of Google Apps.

excellent, now you can wean organizations off of outlook / exchange with importers.

Intranet Explorer

when Microsoft talks about compatibility they’re largely talking about intranet sites inside corporations, which are often maintained poorly or not at all, so anything that’s broken by a browser change will remain broken forever. And it’s easy to see how the needs of large corporate customers can come to dominate the thinking of a software organization

this is why microsoft utterly fails on the web: they are internally divided, provide bogus arguments against the evolution of the web because it would hurt their cash cows.
