Zurich cityecho

the initial issue of zurich cityecho is now available. billed as a monthly event magazine, it offers better service than existing event rags, to wit:

  • More location details
  • More non-mainstream events
  • less advertising

while some of the details of this new magazine are still in flux, there is hope that it can offer options beyond the house / R&B wasteland that is the conventional wisdom. i wish these guys luck. disclaimer: my sister christine is one of the founders of cityecho.

TV? Stereo?

What was interesting about our discussion – which was echoed by some friends packing their kids off to school this weekend – was their data showing college students now arriving at school with 2 things, dominantly. First, a cell phone. Second, a laptop. In that order. Stereo? Nope. TV? No. Did you bring a phone to school? I’m embarrassed to identify the model I used. Or stereo. Everyone had them. No more.
What do college kids do with their laptops? Shoot at each other. Play movies. Listen to music. Write papers. Chat. TV? Stereo? Why bother. They’re focused – just like the rest of us – on interactive communications and entertainment. Things have changed. Ask a college kid which they’d be less likely to give up: their mobile or their laptop. Interesting.

roger that, except why bother with a cell phone?

anchors sinking to the ground

ex-CNN tokyo chief rebecca mackinnon on bypassing anchors with your newsreader:

I got even more excited just now when my Sharpreader notified me of the Reuters TV headline: “Congolese Soldiers, Hutus Clash”. Clicking on the link, I got to watch a raw Reuters feed of video and sound bites from the aftermath of the latest violent mess in Congo without some reporter’s narration, accompanied by a text story that explains what I am seeing. Somehow I doubt this story is going to be on the network or cable TV news shows this evening, or if it is, it will be a brief 30-second anchor-read.

tv might just have become a viable information medium again.
