Consumer Thermal Imaging
this an awkward implementation, but i welcome the addition of new sensors. being able to find and fix those spots where you’re leaking heat is very empowering.
FLIR Systems launched the FLIR ONE, the first consumer-oriented thermal imaging system for a smartphone.
2015-01-06: Given the embarrassing quality of most houses in the us, a bit of public leak shaming would be great.
Drive-by heat mapping from MIT spinoff Essess can quickly track energy leaks.
What is NYC?
by this definition, nyc (37600 km²) is nearly the same size as switzerland (41285 km²) but has 23M inhabitants vs 7M.

Darien Gap
TIL you can’t actually drive from alaska to tierra del fuego, there is a pesky gap in southern panama:
The Darien Gap is one of the last places people really hesitate to venture to. It’s an absolute pristine jungle but it’s got some nasty sections with thorns, wasps, snakes, thieves, criminals, you name it. Everything that’s bad for you is in there.”
Best NYC graffiti

i already knew about 5pointz (to be demolished later this year 😦 and bushwick but this heatmap has some other graffiti hotspots.
Comparing cities
this is really awesome, and the first time in recorded history where ESRI produced maps that don’t suck.
The Urban Observatory is an interactive exhibit that gives you the chance to compare and contrast maps of cities around the world–all from one location. It aims to make the world’s data both understandable and useful. Brought to life by Richard Saul Wurman, RadicalMedia, and Esri, it is the first exhibit of its kind.

NK missiles fail geography

The paper map visible in that photo shows the Pacific on the left and the continental US on the right, with missile trajectories drawn from North Korea to a number of locations in the US, including Hawaii. The only problem: Missile trajectories from North Korea to the continental US fly over Kamchatka and Alaska… because the Earth is not flat. North Korea’s military probably knows about great circles, but its propaganda department obviously failed geography. Or perhaps the photo above depicts Kim Jong-un providing on-site cartographic guidance to his aerospace engineering team, and the problem will by now have fixed itself.
