Luddite Larry King

Larry King confessed to Roseanne Barr that he’s never used the Internet. King expressed doubt that the Internet was a viable political medium because “there’s 80 billion things on it.” When Barr said she liked the Internet, King acknowledged that “I’ve never done it, never gone searching.”

i am torn whether that is retro-cool or a reflection of the state of old media

Botnet turf wars

Spam researchers have discovered an ongoing turf war between “botnet” masters who are attempting to infect rivals’ computers and then kick out rivals’ own spyware so that the computers they compromise become uniquely theirs.

wasn’t there a bad movie from the 80s with that premise?

Vermont E-State

As defined in Vermont, e-stateness means cellular and adequate broadband coverage – fixed and mobile – everywhere in the state by 2010. The initial definition of adequate fixed broadband is 3 megabits per second service in at least one direction; but the bill contains a mechanism for ratcheting that up as requirements escalate. It is estimated that this requirement may be as high as 20 megabits in both directions by 2013.

this is way better than the telco act of 1996 that handed free money to the incumbents ($200b) in return for nothing

Bruce Willis, forum troll

What do you when you’ve got millions of $, no steady day job, and plenty of vocal critics that do their best to berate you knowing full well that they could never do your job if given the chance? We might just ask Bruce Willis that very question, but thankfully for all us, he’s already responded. Apparently, Mr. Willis not only finds his way around internet message boards that focus on his films, but he doesn’t hesitate to join in on the oftentimes testy conversations and give users his platinum-laced 2 cents. In a recent go ’round in regard to Die Hard 4, Bruce was caught mouthing off to disbelievers and carpers alike, and while a select few were adamant that this so-called Walter B. was little more than an overzealous fanboy, Bruce did the honorary thing and offered to prove it.

heh. he takes good care of his internet reputation.

China MySpace

The front page shows 3 mainland Chinese users and 3 international users, and they can all friend each other. How do they choose who gets on the page as international users? Unclear. But Tom is every Chinese MySpace user’s first friend, as usual. Seems like there might not be that many Chinese users…or maybe not that many writing in English. Unclear.

now we only need instant translations and the fun begins for real

China Internet Culture

Chinese users have lower standards for their glamor shot — blurry and what i called candid webcam shots are in.

heh
2009-03-03:

This view challenges the dominant paradigm we use to understand the Chinese internet, the Great Firewall. Rebecca argues that this makes it harder to understand cybertarianism. We’re tempted to assume that if we just lift the Firewall, China will be free… and that’s an extremely naive view. The GFW only pertains to servers hosted outside of China. For sites hosted within China, the Net Nanny is a much better metaphor for understanding content control.

it is not as straightforward as “the great firewall”
