SkyMall

one of america’s greats. snif.

The SkyMall catalog has always been good for a chuckle when you have absolutely nothing else to read during a flight and you just can’t sleep. Some people have presumably even bought stuff through the publication, as it’s difficult to sustain a business if the only revenue is punchlines. But apparently not enough of us are doing our inflight shopping through SkyMall, as the company has filed for Chapter 11.

Urban fishing

very mad max

An estimated 3000 fish, brought to the roofless, flooded building 10 years ago by nearby vendors in hopes of controlling a burgeoning mosquito population, are being removed by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration staff. Once the fish are captured, they’ll be brought to Thailand’s Department of Fisheries research and development labs before being released into various water bodies across Thailand.

Building Cyborgs

In 2006, DARPA studied cockroaches as a robotics platform. They soon learned that cockroaches have a mind of their own, and will ignore implanted directions (via electrical stimuli) after ~30min. this makes them unsuitable for spy missions, but it triggered interest in the neurobiology community as a new model organism.

Cockroaches have a simple body plan, and have their processing spread around the body. With some basic surgery, a cockroach can be turned into a robot by attaching the antenna to current, you can make a cockroach go left/right

The first workshop for building your own cyborg was this weekend. my specimen didn’t pass final QC because i didn’t secure the antenna cables securely enough, and the cockroach disconnected 😦
