Google Transit Implications

This isn’t about Google at all. The issues Google Transit raises merely go to the core of what we do with local public transport data. This is all part of a much wider data liberalisation/control agenda. In the case of public transport information, there are real benefits to data liberalisation, even if that means there is no way to recover the costs of gathering the data

hopefully this will force the agencies to make their transit data freely available, as some enlightened ones like BART already do

the vatican secret archives are using a google maps like pan/zoom UI to show some historically important documents. i wish it zoomed in more though (and there was a translation / annotation layer on top)

Today in the hotel lobby I noticed the concierge using Google Transit to help a couple find the best route to a local doctor using Oahu transit system. They were amazed at what was printed out for them and how simple it made everything vs. using a timetable

Google Transit Graduates

Google Transit has just graduated from Google Labs! We’re excited to say it’s now a fully integrated feature in Google Maps. This means that when you look up directions for areas where we have transit coverage you’ll now have the option of seeing how to get there using public transportation.

now, let’s hope all the recalcitrant transit agencies see the light.
