Stonebraker on fast databases
If your infrastructure was built with 1s latency, it’s just impossible to continue, because if the people arbitraging against you have less latency than you do, you lose. A lot of the legacy infrastructures weren’t built for sub-millisecond latency.

Parochial Innovation
One of the most ridiculous assertions to come from the (angels on the panel) was that the only place in the world where you could innovate and raise capital (for innovation) is Northern California. I’m not even going to bother wasting my breath deconstructing this idiotic and parochial worldview
There is a certain irony in the lack of innovation in the financing of innovation, don’t you think?
Finance Spam
On April 14, 2007, I signed up for an AmeriTrade account using an e-mail address consisting of 16 random alphanumeric characters, which I never gave to anyone else. On May 15, I started receiving pump-and-dump stock spams sent to that email address. I was hardly the first person to discover that this happens. Almost all of the top hits in a Google search for “ameritrade spam” are from people with the same story: they used a unique address for each service that they sign up with, so they could tell if any company ever leaked their address to a spammer, and the address they gave to AmeriTrade started getting stock spam.”
ameritrade has an insider selling email addresses. they need a SOX audit
Explosive Ad

In a scene reminiscent of the Cartoon Network bomb scare that paralyzed the Boston area in January, police shut down a strip mall yesterday in this small western suburb after employees at a Bank of America branch mistook a botched fax for a bomb threat. The branch overreacted to the strange fax, which turned out to be an in-house marketing document sent by the bank’s corporate office.
what is BoA doing sending stupid faxes like that? the solution: radically cut down the number of branches and switch people to online banking
Electronic funds transfer
i continue to be amazed at the stupidity of the US financial system. they require me to authorize people to credit money to my bank account. WTF?

Machine-Readable News
more algorithmic trading. it is quite irritating that in 2007 they still need to write articles that explain that “a computer can execute a trade much faster than a human” oy
