Extreme cavers
this is really fascinating.
On his 13th day underground, when he’d come to the edge of the known world and was preparing to pass beyond it, Marcin Gala placed a call to the surface. He’d travelled more than 5km through the earth by then, over stalagmites and boulder fields, cave-ins and vaulting galleries. He’d spidered down waterfalls, inched along crumbling ledges, and bellied through tunnels so tight that his back touched the roof with every breath. Now he stood at the shore of a small, dark pool under a dome of sulfurous flowstone. He felt the weight of the mountain above him—1600m of solid rock—and wondered if he’d ever find his way back again. It was his last chance to hear his wife and daughter’s voices before the cave swallowed him up.
Woolworth Building
Woolworth Building is typically closed to visitors due to security paranoia. a shame, the interior was designed to attract attention. the basement now houses a lonely and forgotten bike rack, a far cry from the swimming pool and german beer cellar it used to.

East River Blueway
East River Blueway is taking shape. there are new piers, a beach, and more esplanade opening this summer. on a related note, the floating swimming pool on the brooklyn side is making progress too and should be operational by summer 2016.

walking through the doors is like traveling back in time to the 1930s.
Bronx Outdoors
New York City was recognized as one of American Forests’ 10 Best Cities for Urban Forests. To those in disbelief, the urban jungle flaunts green space galore with all its grit and bricks. More impressively, the Bronx not only has among the greatest number of parks in all the 5 boroughs, but it is also home to some of the largest parklands within the city.
A good OHNY haul
ohny.org was productive this weekend. 1) sound lab at arup engineering, where they can recreate sounds from arbitrary built and imaginary spaces, 2) brooklyn army terminal, massive wwii era warehouse, 3) old croton aqueduct, gave rise to chase bank and kept nyc from running out of water, 4) FDR house in manhattan, where he recovered from polio and put together plans for the new deal, 5) old TWA terminal at JFK, it is hard to imagine a more james bond airport.
