To celebrate the 50th anniversary of French-Chinese diplomatic relations, the French production company La Machine traveled to Beijing, China, with 2 of its massive mechanical puppets, including a 6m spider named La Princesse and the newly added Long Ma, a 46-ton fire-breathing dragon-horse made of wood and steel. La Machine put on 3 days of performances titled “Long Ma, Spirit of the Dragon Horse”.
much of china’s infrastructure is new & shiny, but not well built
China produced more cement from 2011-2012 than the US did in the entire 20th century
other than the crazy growth, there is also the US infatuation with wood for construction.
this a very interesting look into what is going on in emerging markets. the name is so apt because they far surpass the rate of change in the west. while we dork around with qr codes / rfid / nfc / ble, these countries are getting massive things done.

Cyanobacteria are now being used in China to shore up the verges of roads and railways in northern China as well as the margins of oases and farmland. A team plans to seed 133 square kilometer of desert over the next 5 years. The bacteria creates 0.5 to 1.0 centimeter thick biocrust over the desert which helps topsoil to reform and prevents top soil erosion. In its next step, China plans to have 200k square km of desertified land, or 50% of the country’s desert area that can be reversed, harnessed by 2020 and improve living standards for people living in the desert
this is much less known than you’d expect for an event of this magnitude: 160M people have moved to cities in china in the last 30 years.
looks like the transsiberian railroad is getting some competition. i rode it in 2008 and it was very memorable.

On the mainland side, cities like Shenzhen and Guangzhou bring the promise of cheap components, low-cost contract work, and the street cred of “having done the Shenzhen thing.” And on the island, the capitalist utopia called Hong Kong glows with all of its high finance and stories of lavish expat lifestyles.

2017-02-05: if you want to bring manufacturing back, you have to switch to open source hardware and scrap all the patents overhead. as long as everything is slowed down by lawyers, shenzhen will innovate 3-10x faster.
