Battery production scaling

3 massive battery storage plants—built by Tesla, AES Corp., and Altagas Ltd.—are all officially going live in southern California at about the same time. Any one of these projects would have been the largest battery storage facility ever built. Combined, they amount to 15% of the battery storage installed planet-wide last year.

Fake food comes to africa

Artificial food products such as fake rice recently confiscated by Nigerian customs officials are intended for restaurant displays and not to be eaten. The fake rice was made of PVC, “and should be labelled “artificial”. Customs officials cooked the “rice” and ended up with a sticky mess. They sent samples to laboratories to determine its chemical composition.

The United States and Japan are the only G7 countries that have not signed up to be Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) members, a move viewed by Beijing as a sign of Washington’s mistrust of the Chinese government and its ambition to exert bigger regional influence. US membership of the AIIB and endorsing China’s efforts to revive trade routes along the ancient Silk Road, would be a big sign of goodwill from Washington to Beijing to pave the way for future agreements.

A California aluminum executive commissioned a pilot to fly over the Mexican town of San José Iturbide and snap aerial photos of a remote desert factory. He made a startling discovery. Nearly 1M tons of aluminum sat neatly stacked behind a fortress of barbed-wire fences. The stockpile, worth some $2b and representing 6% of the world’s total inventory quickly became an obsession for the US aluminum industry.
