hard to ignore

Weblogs are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore for those of us who spend much time reading the Web. Also known by the inscrutable nickname “blogs”, weblogs are something of a hard nut to crack. Compounding the difficulty is the fact that a great deal of weblog content today is about weblogs and weblog technology. What are weblogs? What’s the big deal? Why should we pay attention? We attempt to answer these questions in the essay that follows.

very cogent analysis of the blogosphere.

A list apart

Never miss another issue of A List Apart Magazine. Our XML feeds will keep you informed whenever fresh content appears on this site.

Nice, i have long wished they would. just in time for my sunday brunch with Jeffrey. Of course, they use a “custom content management system”. heh.

mail2blog

i can post in html with my email client to my blog (through a special email-address linked to it), selecting multiple categories.(by specifying them in a X-Categories custom mail header). Attachments to the email are automatically placed in the right location.

interesting. of course, such functionality is crucial for moblogging too. the moment of release is coming nearer, but there is a place to play in the meantime.

on this day in 1660

I went out to Charing Cross, to see Major- general Harrison hanged, drawn; and quartered; which was done there, he looking as cheerful as any man could do in that condition. He was presently cut down, and his head and heart shown to the people, at which there was great shouts of joy. It is said, that he said that he was sure to come shortly at the right hand of Christ to judge them that now had judged him; and that his wife do expect his coming again. Thus it was my chance to see the King beheaded at White Hall, and to see the first blood shed in revenge for the blood of the King at Charing Cross.

some bloggers have more interesting experiences than others.

Calendaring low hanging fruit

what i love about this blog stuff is that there are so many low hanging fruit. wherever you look, it is just a matter of mixing various xml dialects. and we haven’t really figured out what large-scale namespace intertwingling will bring either, but the permutative power is obvious. invariably, my thoughts center around various PIM functions that could be enhanced by weblog technology, such as calendaring and mind mapping. i have yet to delve deeper into the mind mapping stuff, but calendaring has some interesting starting points:

i left out the earlier research i did on calendaring, and there is also my rendered calendar which is unfortunately behind a realm due to configuration issues.
in any event, it may make sense to define yet another link tag (is there a central registry somewhere?) to point to your iCal file, enabling auto discovery. how about
<link rel=”calendar” type=”text/x-xcal” title=”calendar” href=”https://greg.abstrakt.ch/calendar.ical&#8221; />
the type is of course always debatable. i am following prior art here i think. now, to weave these loose ends into something compelling.

doh!

i just learned that charlie had hooked me up with a complimentary pass for day one of bloggerCon which was yesterday. i had not known about it, so i did not attend. damn!!
at least, i am here now, after the usual public transport ordeal. i really need to learn how to drive.

Pioneers

i ran into ed cone and lance knobel last night.
i talked with ed about tara sue, and how she was the pioneer for political weblogs. mentioned that something interesting may soon happen with political weblogs in switzerland. lance used to run the davos meetings of the WEF, and has had a weblog for years. in years past, he used to provide very good inside coverage, something that is now sorely missed. he made me aware of some MP in the UK that really understand political weblogs, and consequently write them themselves.

blogs and style

here are the notes from the panel i was on at seybold for some stupid reason, they are keeping the slides to themselves behind a password:
why i blog?
– first note taking
– short attention span
– exotic hobby, no one i knew personally was doing it
– more and more interaction with others
– serendipity is my big thing now
– got more and more interested in blog infrastructure
– not what is obvious (posts), but what is harder to see: interactions, patterns,
– immediacy is important
– “i was there”
– discovery of context, very local
– led to more mobile uses of blog.
– a picture has higher emotional quality
– who cares about pictures once you are home
my tool
– kaywa: focusing on the swiss market where picture phones and mobile us e is big. not too many weblogs yet
– we are php guys with a strong interest in xml
– we were not happy with the usability of existing tools, although mt comes close
– we want to make it easy to publish from your mobile
– pictures integrated
– involved with internet art
– very picture-driven -> perfect use of moblog
– lower barrier to entry
– strikes me as a very consumer thing, taking pictures & uploading them.
– interest from realtors, doctors
