that’s some rad-looking clouds

As the founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, saw these submissions trickle in, he realized his group had collectively stumbled onto something interesting: A new type of cloud. This formation wasn’t listed in the International Cloud Atlas, published by the World Meteorological Organization since 1896. So Pretor-Pinney devised a name for this cloud — “Asperitas”, derived from “a passage in Virgil describing a roughened sea”. He’s been working for years to get it accepted into the next edition of the Atlas.

What Amber explained was exactly what I’d feared: through the Apple Music subscription, which I had, Apple now deletes files from its users’ computers. When I signed up for Apple Music, iTunes evaluated my massive collection of Mp3s and WAV files, scanned Apple’s database for what it considered matches, then removed the original files from my internal hard drive. FB Fake News Defeat

Some of the posts on the fake news sites’ pages went extremely viral many months after Facebook announced its crackdown. An Empire News story reporting that Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev sustained serious injuries in prison received 240k likes, 43k shares, and 28k comments on its Facebook page. The incident was pure fiction, but still spread like wildfire on the platform. An even less believable post about a fatal gang war sparked by the “Blood” moon was shared 22k times from the Facebook page of Huzlers, another fake news site.

90% renewables by 2030

Renewables like solar and wind are plunging in price. But there are impediments to powering a grid entirely, or even primarily, with renewable energy. How far can they go? A new paper suggests that wind and solar could power 60% of the US’s electricity needs, given a national grid, without any energy storage, and without massive overbuild. Another 20% of the grid’s electricity would come from CO2-free hydro and nuclear.
