Forking languages
having finished the power of babel, a book on language evolution, i found the following comment on how the internet promotes “bad” spelling insightful:
Ironically, the internet seems to be taking us back a few centuries, to the days before English spellings were standardized by the likes of Webster and other lexicographers. Which was fine back when all parsing of text was done by humans, who could easily figure out that “Thomas Smith” and “Tomas Smythe” were the same person. But as this article points out, it can be a problem when more literal computers are concerned.
it would be highly ironic if electronic media eventually led to the emergence of many new dialects after having contributed substantially to the demise of most of the world’s languages. these new dialects would not necessarily form along geographical lines, but would connect social subgroups independent of location.
one particularly amusing slip i am seeing more and more is “bare with me”.
i love you too
Friends John, Bruce, Kent, Drew, Gregor, Linda, Llama-Dave, Rob, Mel and many others all stay in regular (or at least semi-regular) touch with me via IM and email. The phone still works, but these Internet tools generally make contact more convenient and/or immediate. I miss all these people, but everyday proves the shortest distance between 2 friends is the Internet, at least those who are geographically separated.
i can attest to doug’s testimonial. i would be very sad right now if i could not maintain contact with people dear to me over the internet.

Fostering the provision of public goods
Let’s say for instance, that Xaraya attracted 5 more non-profit organizations to the development group. They would then be in a collective of IT development for a single purpose. Are there costs involved? Absolutely, but when you compare the costs to hiring an IT staff of 40 to 50 with a range of experience from management, database design, server management, etc.., it makes sense in the long run.
john muses on what would happen if xaraya were able to gain the support of additional non-profits. i think the time is right to actively work towards this scenario. the tools are ready, and the developers can be had at a discount currently. it is highly motivational and piques my curiosity to see the ideas in Free Provision of Complex Public Goods being implemented. who knew that i would see the application of highly theoretical work i pored over for my thesis in my lifetime ๐
R.A.W. reborn
I have had the pleasure of listening to some vintage 1995 jungle. One of the foremost artists of the time, R.A.W. recently re-released some of his mixes.
2 classic mix tapes from junglist R.A.W. finally getting committed to the digital format after many years of floating around in cassette obscurity. Both “R.A.W. Is Dead” and “Who Wants To Battle?” have been Remastered, with “R.A.W. Is Dead” showing R.A.W.’s skills at blending dark jungle anthems in his own inimitable style, while “Who Wants To Battle?” goes more with his b-boy roots, with his battle skills on full display.

2007-01-05: Music Star uses KAYWA.
Tomorrow, the third edition of Musicstar (aka American Idol, Superstar) will start on Swiss National Television. Kaywa provides the blogs for the candidates.
What’s special is that the candidates can moblog their videos right from their mobile phone and everyone can then see their flash-movies some seconds later

Hokeyness
sarah: “hokey” is slang for something… corny, “mawkishly sentimental”, etc ๐
Unscientific policy
The report Politics and Science in the Bush Administration finds numerous instances where the Administration has manipulated the scientific process and distorted or suppressed scientific findings. Beneficiaries include important supporters of the President, including social conservatives and powerful industry groups.
