As new opportunities emerge, new projects start, something has to give. It has become apparent to me that I need to perform some triaging on my life’s activities.

Open coding innovation

Technology should not be pursued for its own sake.
George is focusing his talk on the threats of technologies. technology will move forward, no doubt. what ethical measures can help to guide the ascent of new technology? a new social contract is needed. apparently there are licenses that go beyond the GNU GPL to enforce desired behavior in a more diverse field.

The Hacktivismo Enhanced-Source Software License Agreement (HESSLA) is a software source license that tries to put restrictions of ethical conduct on use and modification of the software.

i never really considered licenses as a moral imperative. dunno if these efforts will go anywhere, it seems they will have a hard time as i believe law is a bad tool to shape human behavior.

Open source value proposition

since i’m going to give some talks on open source again, i decided to upload my slides about the value proposition of open source.
the next talk will probably be at HSG in the information management department on june 18.

the globalization of bad taste

I’ve riled against demeaning adverts and promised to start uploading some that I find bad, offensive or downright unimaginative. All of these will have a common theme: that the Gulf Arabs are “stupid” and as such should either to talked at or down to from the creators of these adverts. Here’s a sample of ads I recorded over the last couple of days.

i have long believed that ads display the worst in a culture. so far this observation held true wherever i went. i always wince when i see commercials.

web search for a planet

Amenable to extensive parallelization, google’s web search application lets different queries run on different processors and, by partitioning the overall index, also lets a single query use multiple processors. to handle this workload, google’s architecture features clusters of more than 15K commodity class pcs with fault-tolerant software. this architecture achieves superior performance at a fraction of the cost of a system built from fewer, but more expensive, high-end servers.

unlikely roomies

i ran into my former mentor at kpmg yesterday. he now runs IT Risk consulting for the nordic countries for ernst & young. he lives in copenhagen during the week, in a flat share with 2 20y old students. that’s the spirit.
